WPG is thrilled to welcome David Wheeler to the team!
On the pitch, David is a midfielder for Wycombe Wanderers FC. His Professional repertoire includes helping Milton Keynes Dons and Wycombe Wanderers achieve promotion and currently holding the record for most goals in consecutive games for Exeter City FC.
Off the pitch, David is no stranger to making an impact. David’s sustainability journey began when he tried to reduce his own carbon footprint. Having always loved nature and the outdoors, he was inspired to take action; however, he quickly realized that he could make a great impact by inspiring others to follow a similar path.
“I think community, togetherness, and collaboration are all hugely important when trying to tackle the climate crisis, which is why I’ve decided to team up with We Play Green and join fellow players in trying to change the game from within, but also use football as a vehicle for influencing broader change across society that we need to see in order to protect the planet.”
Alongside his passion for the cliamte and environment, David is an outspoken advocate for mental health in the professional game. He has both an undergraduate and postgraduate degree in sports science and sport psychology respectively, and has conducted research that sheds light on football’s reluctance to embrace psychological support.
David’s off-the-pitch impact is also apparent within all the organizations and causes he supports. Alongside WPG, he is an ambassador for environmental organizations Football For Future and Planet League. He is also an ambassador for the political movement Make Votes Matter, the mental health rehabilitation clinic Sporting Chance, and donates 2% of his annual wage to environmental charities recommended by High Impact Athletes (HIA).
We are very excited to see what great things David will bring to the WPG team thanks to his wealth of experience and passion for all things important both on and off the pitch! Welcome 2 the team, David!
