WPG on the Winning Side of the Campaign Against False Claims of Carbon Neutrality for the 2022 Qatar World Cup

23-06-08

WPG was one of the organizations that supported the winning complaint to advertising authorities against FIFA’s claim that the World Cup in Qatar is “climate neutral”.

On June 6th, a Swiss advertising authority ruled that FIFA was found guilty of misleading consumers through the claim of Qatar’s “carbon neutrality”.

WPG supported this cause thanks to a report by Carbon Market Watch which showed how FIFA grossly underestimated the emissions of the World Cup.

WPG strongly believes that when it comes to greenwashing, deceiving the public on such a large platform is not only wrong but also influences how sports tournaments will be conducted in the future and worldwide. If we want future generations to live and play as we do today, football’s leading organization must do better.

Along with the support of our player ambassadors, Bart Vriends (Sparta Rotterdam), Morten Thorsby (Union Berlin), Christian Dahle Borchgrevink (Vålerenga Fotball), David Wheeler (Wycombe Wanderers) Elin Landström (AS Roma), and Emilie Bølviken (Stabæk Fotballk), WPG signed the complaint that five organizations collectively sent to their respective advertising authorities.

These organizations include the New Weather Institute in the United Kingdom, Alliance Climatique in Switzerland, Notre Affaire à tous in France, Carbon Market Watch in Belgium, Fossil Free Football, and Reclame Fossielvrij in the Netherlands.
