TV 2’s new documentary on Morten is live! From the Norwegian countryside to the World Cup stage – and a mission that goes far beyond the game.
When Morten Thorsby pulls on his boots, he carries two things with him: a drive to compete at football’s highest level, and an equally fierce determination to protect the world we live in. For Morten, those two worlds are inseparable.
Morten is the co-founder of We Play Green, our movement that is built on the belief that football – with its billions of fans and power to move people – can be one of the most effective forces for environmental change on the planet. The initiative brings together players, clubs, fans, and communities to act on climate, reduce waste, and accelerate the green transition through the sport they love.
The Tension He Leans Into
Morten is refreshingly honest about the contradictions of his position. “I think the fact that ‘footballer’ and ‘climate activist’ appear together leads some people to think I’m a hypocrite,” he says. “And I understand that. We live in a modern society that requires us to fly to work. That’s part of modern life we can’t take away.”
But rather than retreat from the tension, he turns it into an argument. “We need role models who live lives that young people look up to. I’ve missed that kind of role model in public life – someone who shows that change is possible.”
A Journey Captured on Film
That story is now at the heart of a new four-part documentary series produced by TV 2, following Morten and We Play Green across four urgent themes: sustainable food, football gear waste, ocean pollution, and Morten’s personal journey toward the World Cup.
“We footballers are not perfect. Neither am I,” he says. “But I try to do what I can to save nature. Because when my football career is over, there is nothing I’d rather do than spend more time in it.”
The World Cup Question
The series doesn’t shy away from harder conversations – including the cost of the World Cup itself. “This will be the single sporting event in history with the largest carbon footprint, by a wide margin,” Morten says.
But his response is not to condemn: “The World Cup has enormous value in bringing people together across borders. In the society we live in, we have to allow some types of emissions. That’s the kind of values debate that needs to be had.”
A Call to Everyone
Ultimately, We Play Green’s message is about possibility. “If everyone engages – just a little. You, me, footballers, fans, farmers, politicians, Norwegians, Italians – it will help,” says Morten. “We just have to want it.”
First, though, there’s a World Cup to play.
