Green Bag – Circular Football Gear

Purpose

To build a circular ecosystem for football gear — reducing waste, inspiring sustainable habits, and rewarding responsible choices across the football community.

About the project

The Green Bag is We Play Green’s innovative solution for creating a circular system for football gear. By collecting, sorting, reusing, reproducing, and recycling equipment, the Green Bag makes it easy for players, clubs, and families to take part in a sustainable football economy. The Green Bag will be piloted in spring 2026 and aims to make circular thinking a natural part of the game — from the grassroots to the elite.

How it works

When your gear is no longer needed, return it in a Green Bag at a collection point — store, club, or event. WPG staff or partners collect the filled bags and transport them to the sorting facility.

Sorting & Assessment

Each item is assessed for its next best, or only use:

• Reuse: Prepared for second-hand sale.
• Reproduce: Transformed into new products (e.g., football nets, hats, etc.).
• Recycle: Sent to recycling partners.
• Waste: Sent to waste-to-energy plants, preferably with carbon capture CCS

Resale

Reusable and reproduced products are sold or distributed through pop-up shops, club events, or retailers. These products re-enter the Green Bag ecosystem — completing the circle.
