Green Bag

Green Bag – Circular Football Gear

The Green Bag is We Play Green’s innovative solution for creating a circular ecosystem for football gear. By collecting, sorting, reusing, reproducing, and recycling football gear, the Green Bag makes it easy for players, clubs, and families to participate in a sustainable football economy—reducing waste and rewarding responsible choices.

The Green Bag will be piloted in fall 2025.

How does the Green Bag work?

Return
  • When your gear is no longer needed, return it in a Green Bag at a collection point (store, club, event, etc.).
  • WPG staff or partners collect the filled Green Bags and transport them to the sorting facility.

Sorting & assessment
  • Each product is assessed for its next best use:
    • Reuse: Good condition items prepared for second-hand sale.
    • Reproduce: Items transformed into new products (e.g., Fotballnett, hats, etc.).
    • Recycle: Materials sent to partners for recycling.
    • Storage: If sustainable recycling is not available, the gear will be stored until possible; we call the storage “The Atacama Tower”.
Resale
  • Reusable and reproduced products are sold or distributed through pop-up shops, club events, or retailers.
  • These products re-enter the Green Bag ecosystem, making the lifecycle circular.

The Green Pass enhances the value of the Green Bag

When you purchase new equipment, you can activate the Green Pass for your gear. This activation compensates for the cost your gear imposes on nature.

You have two compensation options:

  1. All Inclusive: Compensates for pre-shop (production, transport), usage (washing), and 2nd life (Green Bag).
  2. 2nd Life: Compensates for the operating costs of the Green Bag.

Activated gear is marked with a tag, allowing traceability and showing your responsible action. A share of the activation cost is returned to your Green Pass account or the Football Fund when the gear is returned—serving as a deposit to secure redelivery to the Green Bag.

By integrating the Green Bag and Green Pass, We Play Green incentivizes circular attitudes and actions, driving green will and speeding up the green transformation.

How does the green pass work for football gear?

Purchase & activation
  • Buy new or used football gear at a participating store, club, event, or online.
  • Activate your Green Pass for the gear and receive a physical label with an NFC chip or digital code.
  • Press or glue the label to your gear.
    • Personal activation: Chip in the label identifies the gear, allowing you to connect it with your Green Pass profile via the app.
    • Football fund pass: No chip, but the label identifies a deposit paid to the Football Fund.

Why use the Green Bag and subscribe to the Green Pass?

  • Easy and rewarding participation.
  • Ensures every product finds its best subsequent use—reuse, reproduction, or recycling.
  • Supports grassroots football, as deposits and rewards help fund sustainability projects in local clubs.

The Green Pass for Green Bag will be piloted in fall 2025.
