Green Will Index

Purpose
The Green Will Index serves multiple purposes:
- To measure and communicate the true strength and development of Green Will
- To inspire sponsors, clubs, players, and grassroots to help grow it
- To evaluate the impact of We Play Green’s projects
- And to provide a platform for friendly competitions between clubs, communities, regions, and countries
About the project
We Play Green defines Green Will as a function of people’s Inspiration and Contribution — expressed simply as:
Green Will = Inspiration × Contribution
Without inspiration, there is no motivation.
Without contribution, there is no change.
That’s why we say: “Inspiration sparks it – Contribution proves it.”
Inspiration is the emotional and intellectual spark that makes people care — when the climate crisis becomes personal and meaningful. It includes awareness of the triple crisis, an understanding of why change is needed, and belief in the difference one can make.
Through the Green Will Index, we aim to make Inspiration measurable — developing polling and testing tools that capture both what people feel and what they understand about the need for transformation.
Contribution reflects how inspiration turns into real support and behaviour. It covers the choices people make in their daily lives — what they buy, how they travel, what they eat, and how they use energy — as well as their readiness to support green policies, public investments, and to share the cost of sustainable solutions. Together, Inspiration and Contribution show how deeply the green transition has taken root in people’s hearts and habits.
How it works
We Play Green is partnering with the polling and market-insight institute Opinion to develop the research design, testing tools, and data collection systems.
Inspiration testing at the grassroots level will take the form of fun, engaging “family-and-friends” events — with rewards for the clubs that achieve the highest participation rates.
Testing among fans, supporters, and stakeholders will be conducted both digitally and at workplaces.
Data collection will be carried out through strategic partnerships and sponsors, focusing on key areas of everyday life — consumption, transport, food, energy use, and voting behaviour.
Additional insights will be gathered from social media activity and other public expressions of opinion.
